tolkien-inspired poems!

these were written around jan/feb 2025, when i was devouring all of tolkien middle-earth related stories, and also in love.

tolkien used different styles for the various peoples of middle-earth, and i'm not skilled enough to do it, so i use a mish-mash of rohan, hobbit and elvish modes. also the elvish names are a neoquenyan invention of mine and probably not accurate

most poems are meant to be sung, instead of recited. as for the styles, poetry written by the rohirrim uses a lot of alliteration and the themes relate to rohan and war, hobbits (or to be more precise, bilbo, sam and bilbo) sing about the pleasures of life, about the beauty of the shire and the places and the people they meet, elves have the most refined songs of them all, and they like to write odes to prominent elves and to the lands they left behind, to the west.

maybe one day i will make a longer post about tolkien's songs, who knows ╮(╯︿╰)╭. if you request it in the guestbook, it'll motivate me to do it hehe

to an old friend and partner

From forests green, with fae abrim

to cities grey and with soot grim

there you dwelt, dressed with smile bold

that lit the world in garnet and gold

as if the light from Laurelin

in your heart hides, its warm within.

O Úruvamáma! Vániëahto! (fiery sheep! maker of beauty!)

Bless us with your tender presence,

so from life we glean greater pleasance!

to a dear friend, for her birthday (still haven't give it to them) (x-x)

Oh Melody-mother, to us sing a song of summer!

Give us much merry, and joy, and laughter!

Many a walk, with your tune, turns to prance

Blow our sorrows away, pray thee, make us dance!

Oh Lullaby-sister, sing us to sleep

carry us away to the blessed deep

the winter cold makes the days hazy

fill our dreams with fields of daisy

Oh Ditty-daughter, sing the spring praises!

The flowers grow brighter in your presence!

The warmth of your voice the high snows thaws!

Fill the valleys with song, without pause!

Oh Hymn-maker, to thy song the leafs camber!

The forests are red, and brown, and amber!

Rain may fall, but still we shall hum!

To the sound of your voice, may we succumb!

to a love rekindled, unrequited

Westward past the Great Sea yonder

In the lands fair, where Valar dwell

a warm light shines, an earthly wonder

my heart whines, a longing unquelled.

Lindorlin (singer of songs) they call her, in song she delights

her words sweet as nectar, keep filling the nights

we still do remember, we who still remain

in this remote land, in the sun's domain.

O lover of friends, O friend of lovers!

Your gentle embrace is balm for the weary

soft as the snow that the field covers

a winter without, the soul finds it dreary

O Cestahubin (curious puppy), mellow but mighty!

Go forth! Sate your lust for life rightly!

Linger not! The whole world lay afore you!

Farewell! To your return we shall drink to!
